Be certain your dog knows that you are the leader of your pack. Put yourself in an authoritative position, so that your dog knows to obey you. For example, when you walk your dog you must be in front and you should insist your dog follows behind you.

A dog needs a healthy diet as much as a dog owner does. A poor diet is bad for your dog on several levels. It is damaging to their health as well as making them more prone to bad behaviors. By making small changes to your dog's diet, you can alter their receptiveness to the training.

It's important that your dog enjoy training and look forward to training sessions. Remember that dogs have short attention spans, and keep your sessions short accordingly. The rewards offered to your dog need to be plentiful (especially at first) and varied. Make sure to shower your dog with praises when he performs well; dogs love it! The more enjoyable training is for your dog, the more he will look forward to it!

Prior to training your puppy, make a bond with your dog by teaching him what his name is. Call him by name frequently, and teach him to come when called. These are the first words your puppy should learn. Spend lots of time with your dog, so it gets to know you and understands that you are to be trusted. If the puppy trusts you, he will be easier to train later.

One good way to get your dog's attention is by getting him accustomed to responding when you call him by his name. To train your dog, you need a certain level of control. Getting them used to their name and coming when you call will help you achieve this. Try to do this at least ten times a day. Make sure you never punish your pet for responding to his name.

Once you decide to train your dog, it is very important that you continue with the training no matter what. Constant reinforcement and praise are essential when maintaining the training your dog learned in how to behave. Realize that training your dog is a daily task, no different than feeding and sheltering it.

Take small steps when crate training your dog. If your dog seems comfortable inside the crate when the door is open, shut it and feed them a treat. At first, leave the dog enclosed in the crate for only short periods of time, such as 10 seconds, and then gradually increase the duration. If the puppy becomes upset, you may be progressing too quickly.

Harnesses can give you less control of a dog than a cinching collar. When using a collar and harness together, only tug on the collar if necessary. This teaches the dog that he must obey you while the harness is on.

Stay consistent when training your dog. Use certain commands with your dog, and ensure that all of your family members know and use them. Ensure everyone understands the importance of consistency in only rewarding good behavior, not bad behavior. Your dog will become very confused if each person responds differently to a single type of behavior. This will make training very hard.

Use the information you learned in this article to help you start to train your dog. Obtaining a good base of knowledge is the best way to approach the training process, especially is you have no experience in this field.
