Why Do People Love Smartphones

My husband is all about the latest electronics. We have a drawer full of old cell phones, with all their related wires and cases, two old GPS devices, a number of iPods and MP3 players, and a laptop that rarely emerges from its expensive leather case.

Now I’ve discovered why people love smartphones so much. Although I was skeptical at first, I realized that finally I would be able to get rid of all this stuff! I can listen to music on my smart phone, access the internet and use it as a GPS device just by talking to it.

With the half million or so apps that are available I can also play my favorite games when I’m waiting in line at the supermarket or instead of falling asleep at the doctor’s office.

Now when my husband drags me off to a sporting event that I’m not particularly interested in, I can keep in touch with friends on FaceBook, answer e-mails, send text messages and keep an eye on my business wherever I am. No longer do I have to roast my upper thighs with a boiling hot laptop when I’m sick in bed, I can snuggle down with my smart phone and visit a health site to try and find out the best cure for whatever is wrong with me.

With airlines putting us all on a baggage diet, no longer do I need my heavy laptop which I’m always afraid of wrecking, or a pile of books and magazines. Oh yes of course my husband has to watch TV – I wish he’d use his smartphone to do that at home, I hate TV and it’s not something I will be using any time soon although watching a movie on the next trip I take does sound tempting.

Although my old man is always reluctant to dispose of his old electronic gadgets, when I put them in a pile he could see why I was getting so frustrated. I did a little research and found that the phone he used before getting his smart phone could be sold for around $80 or help research a disease through donations.

I told him I would send it off and give him the money only if he allowed me to take the rest of his obsolete devices to the local big box electronics store for recycling or to a charity.

He asked why I didn’t just throw it all in the garbage. I think he has very little social consciousness and wish he'd be more aware of the world around him.
